Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Mykhailo Mudryk is available for selection after rejoining the squad, while Danny Welbeck can also feature and Jordan Henderson’s recovery remains subject to further assessment.
Speaking after Mudryk arrived to link up with the group, Alonso indicated that the winger could be involved immediately but is not yet ready for a full match. The manager stressed that the first priority is rebuilding Mudryk’s connection with team-mates following an extended period training away from the collective environment.
Mudryk back in the group, but managed carefully
Multiple outlets reported that disciplinary proceedings concerning Mudryk had been concluded, allowing the 25-year-old to resume his career. Reports also stated that he had been provisionally suspended in late 2024 and subsequently faced an anti-doping charge, which he contested.
Alonso’s message was one of welcome combined with restraint. He said the club were pleased to have Mudryk back around the squad and noted the positive effect of his return after so long outside a normal team setting. However, the coach made clear that individual work is not the same as football-specific preparation alongside colleagues.
That distinction is important. A player can retain a significant base level of conditioning through solo sessions, but competitive readiness also depends on rhythm, positioning, decision-making and trust with the players around him. Alonso’s assessment suggested Mudryk will need time to recover those collective aspects rather than simply prove he can run at the required intensity.
His immediate availability should therefore not be read as evidence that Chelsea view him as fully match sharp. Alonso confirmed he can be selected, while also indicating that a complete 90-minute outing would be premature. The likely focus will be progressive involvement and observation of how he responds to team training and match action.
No decision on Mudryk’s longer-term future
Alonso also declined to set out a final plan for Mudryk beyond his return to the group. According to the reports, Chelsea have not made a decision over whether the winger could leave on loan or remain within the first-team plans.
That leaves the club with a delicate sporting and personal management task. Mudryk’s return arrives after a disruptive absence, so any judgment on his level will require more than a brief appearance or a handful of training sessions. One report said there have been approaches from three Premier League clubs, naming Coventry City among those credited with interest. That claim was presented as the outlet’s information rather than something confirmed by Chelsea. The manager’s stance keeps several possibilities open. Retaining Mudryk would allow Chelsea to judge his progress closely in their own environment. Welbeck cleared as Henderson awaits review
Alonso confirmed that Welbeck is able to play, providing a more straightforward update on the recent arrival.
