Xabi Alonso said Enzo Fernandez remains fully involved with Chelsea and is being prepared for selection, despite continuing reports linking the midfielder with Manchester City.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League meeting with Fulham, Alonso presented a clear public position: Fernandez has trained well and remains valued within the squad. The manager’s update offered no suggestion that the Argentina international has been removed from first-team plans.
That is significant because Fernandez’s future had become the dominant subject surrounding Chelsea’s preparations. Multiple outlets have reported City interest and uncertainty around a possible move, but Alonso’s comments placed the focus back on the player’s availability rather than negotiations or a departure.
The manager also described a squad being assessed carefully after the summer, with some players potentially requiring additional management following World Cup involvement. That caveat applies to selection generally, rather than providing a definitive answer on whether Fernandez will start.
Availability is not the same as a guaranteed start
There is an important distinction between Alonso confirming Fernandez is ready to be considered and guaranteeing him a place in the side. Reporting on Wednesday included projected Chelsea line-ups in which the midfielder could begin outside the starting team, partly because of the external noise around his future and partly because of his shortened summer preparation.
Those projections should not be confused with a club decision. Alonso did not indicate that Fernandez would be excluded. Instead, he stressed the player’s current work on the training pitch and Chelsea’s satisfaction with his preparation.
The uncertainty nevertheless creates a tactical question for a new head coach. If Fernandez is selected, Chelsea retain a midfielder capable of shaping possession and connecting deeper areas with the forward line. If he is held back, Alonso has other options to alter the balance of midfield, including using players with greater physical or defensive responsibilities.
Reports have also suggested that Alonso has experimented with both a conventional back four and a system using three central defenders during pre-season. His comments reflected an emphasis on competitive mentality and dealing with difficult phases of matches, rather than committing publicly to one formation.
That flexibility matters in the Fernandez situation. A manager adapting structures can absorb a temporary absence more easily than one dependent on a fixed midfield partnership. But keeping a player of Fernandez’s quality integrated also protects Chelsea from allowing transfer speculation to dictate football decisions.

Alonso provided encouraging updates on Levi Colwill, saying the defender’s full pre-season has helped his progress after the problems he experienced last year. The coach indicated that Chelsea will avoid forcing the centre-back’s return too quickly, while expecting him to build confidence and fitness.
He also discussed Reece James’ versatility, highlighting the captain’s intelligence and calmness in possession. That assessment leaves open the possibility of James being used in more than one role as Alonso settles on the shape of his team.
Elsewhere, reports indicated that Chelsea have managed players in separate training groups at Cobham. The club position, according to those reports, is that this is not a punitive group but a mixed arrangement containing players from different situations. Alonso said group dynamics had been handled without issue.
Taken together, the updates point to a coach seeking control over a large and shifting squad. The immediate challenge is not simply choosing a strongest XI; it is setting consistent standards while handling fitness, competition for places and the possibility of late transfer movement.
For Alonso, the Fernandez decision will be read as an early indication of how he intends to separate transfer discourse from team selection. His press-conference message was unambiguous on one point: the midfielder remains part of Chelsea’s working group. Whether that becomes a starting role is a separate, and still unresolved, sporting call.
