Atletico Madrid are reported to have told Julian Alvarez that his future needs to be clearer by Friday, as Arsenal continue to explore a deal for the forward before the September 1 deadline.
The proposed timetable is significant because it shifts the focus from speculation around Alvarez's preferred destination to Atletico's practical need for a replacement. Multiple outlets indicate that the Madrid club would consider a sale to Arsenal if the player commits to leaving and acceptable terms are reached, but want sufficient time to reinvest in their attack.
A deadline, not necessarily a deal
Friday should not be mistaken for a final deadline for a transfer. The window remains open for several more days, and neither club has publicly confirmed an agreement. Instead, it appears to be Atletico's attempt to force a decision after a summer in which their public position and the atmosphere around the player have both changed.
Alvarez was met with a hostile reaction when he appeared as a substitute during Atletico's 2-2 draw with Villarreal. He did not take part in the post-match acknowledgement of supporters, with Diego Simeone later saying that had been decided by the club. Reports on Wednesday also said Alvarez missed training through illness after the squad's scheduled break.
Those events have intensified the impression of an increasingly strained relationship, but they do not settle the central issue: whether Alvarez is ready to choose Arsenal over remaining in Spain. The Argentine has previously signalled that a move would suit all parties, while also making clear that Barcelona is the destination he most wants.
Barcelona remain the complication
Atletico's resistance to selling directly to Barcelona is the factor that has kept Arsenal involved. Reports consistently suggest that the two Madrid and Catalan rivals are unwilling to strike a deal between themselves, regardless of Alvarez's preference.
There is some uncertainty over how absolute that position is. One report suggests Barcelona could yet test Atletico's resolve with an offer around €150m, while others frame the stance as a near-total refusal to strengthen a domestic competitor. The common thread is that Barcelona are not currently regarded as likely to produce the financial package that would change Atletico's calculation.
That leaves a difficult choice for Alvarez. He could stay and attempt to repair a relationship with the Atletico support, or accept that a route to Barcelona may not be immediately available and move to England. Arsenal's task is therefore as much about persuading the player as negotiating with his club.
Reports say the Gunners have outlined a prominent role for Alvarez in Mikel Arteta's attack, with the prospect of using him centrally particularly important. That is a persuasive sporting argument if Alvarez believes he has not always been deployed in his favoured position under Simeone. It also explains why Arsenal have remained patient rather than treating the situation as a routine late-window purchase.

The reporting is not fully aligned on how advanced Arsenal's pursuit is. Some accounts say Atletico have now opened the door to talks after previously regarding Alvarez as unavailable. Others maintain Arsenal are still waiting for firmer encouragement from the player and clarity on Atletico's willingness to sell.
That distinction matters. Permission to discuss a deal is not the same as an agreement in principle, particularly when the selling club is trying to source replacements and the player still favours another destination.
The suggested price also points to the scale of the obstacle. Figures in the region of £128m to £130m have been reported, although there has been no official valuation disclosed. At that level, Arsenal would need either a major cash commitment or a structure that makes the cost more manageable.
The possible player-exchange route
Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus have both been mentioned as potential components of a wider arrangement, with Simeone reportedly keen to add attacking options. Such proposals can be attractive in theory: Atletico would avoid ending the window without forward cover, while Arsenal could reduce the immediate cash outlay.
Yet this is also the least developed strand of the story. There is no indication that either player has agreed to move, that Atletico have selected either as a replacement, or that formal swap negotiations are under way. Gyokeres has been linked most often, but accounts differ over whether one Arsenal forward or a more complex package would be considered.
For Arsenal, the deadline set by Atletico may be useful as well as restrictive. Their long-held belief, according to reports, is that the closer the window gets to closing, the harder it becomes for Atletico to maintain a rigid stance. Atletico are now trying to reverse that pressure by demanding an answer early enough to act.
Friday may therefore reveal whether Alvarez sees Arsenal as a genuine destination or merely the alternative to the Barcelona move he cannot presently secure. Until that question is answered, the negotiations remain a high-profile possibility rather than a completed breakthrough.
