Atletico Madrid have reportedly made their first concrete move towards life without Julian Alvarez, opening talks with Juventus over a loan for Jonathan David that would include an option to buy.
The proposal does not mean Alvarez is leaving imminently. It does, however, alter the backdrop to Arsenal's interest before Tuesday night's transfer deadline. Atletico appear to be preparing for an exit while still trying to persuade their Argentine forward to remain, leaving Arsenal with an opportunity but no indication yet that they have submitted a bid.
David deal is contingency, not confirmation
Multiple outlets agree that Atletico have approached Juventus for David on an initial loan arrangement and that the Canadian is receptive to moving to Spain. The key obstacle is Juventus: they are not thought to be willing to sanction his departure until they have another forward in place.
That qualification matters. Atletico cannot simply treat David as an available replacement, and the whole sequence could move too slowly to resolve Alvarez's future before the window shuts. A loan with a future purchase mechanism would also give Atletico flexibility rather than committing them to an immediate permanent rebuild.
David's potential arrival should therefore be read as a safeguard as much as a farewell signal. Atletico could need cover if Alvarez is sold, but they may also want an alternative should he stay after an increasingly strained summer. One report suggests the club envisage a reduced role as another possible outcome, which means their recruitment is not dependent on a completed Arsenal transfer.
The Alvarez situation remains unclear
There is broad agreement that Alvarez wants a new challenge and that Barcelona had been his preferred destination. Atletico's stance on that possibility appears unequivocal: they do not want to strengthen a domestic rival. The club's chief executive has publicly maintained that keeping Alvarez is the preferred result, while making clear another destination could be explored if staying becomes untenable.
Arsenal consequently feature prominently in the reporting as the likeliest alternative, yet the player side of that equation is less settled. Reports say Alvarez has reservations about returning to the Premier League and that an earlier conversation with Mikel Arteta did not produce a commitment to join Arsenal. Barcelona being effectively removed from contention could change the calculation, but it is not evidence that the forward has chosen the Gunners.
The accounts of his availability also require care. One report says Alvarez missed three training sessions during the week and was absent for Atletico's 3-1 win at Sevilla. Another says he had returned to training but still did not make the travelling squad. Those versions may describe different points in a fast-moving week rather than a direct contradiction, but neither establishes whether any absence was disciplinary, fitness-related or purely a consequence of transfer discussions.
That unanswered detail is important. If Atletico believe the relationship can be repaired, David may be an addition designed to ease pressure on Alvarez rather than replace him. If they conclude it cannot, the Juventus negotiations become a necessary precondition to selling.
Arsenal need clarity more than encouragement
For Arsenal, Atletico's contact with Juventus is encouraging only in a limited sense. It shows that the Spanish club are considering their attacking options. It does not settle a valuation, confirm willingness to negotiate with Arsenal, or demonstrate that Alvarez has changed his mind.
The Gunners' reported alternatives have narrowed. Morgan Rogers has joined Chelsea, while Vinicius Junior has stayed at Real Madrid, according to the reports. They are also expected to lose Gabriel Martinelli to Al-Hilal, with Gabriel Jesus said to be close to Barcelona. Those developments explain why Alvarez remains a live target, but they do not make an agreement easier in the final days of the window.
