Reports on Saturday suggest Chelsea have moved a substantial step closer to signing Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with the 22-year-old potentially travelling to London for medical checks as early as Sunday or Monday.
The prospective move has been framed as part of Chelsea’s planning around Enzo Fernandez, who continues to be linked with Manchester City. Yet the reporting around both transfers is notably less settled than the headline development might imply. Chelsea appear to be preparing for a possible midfield departure, but it remains unclear whether Camara’s arrival is dependent on Fernandez leaving or whether the club want to add him regardless.
A deal advancing, but important details remain absent
One report says Monaco and Chelsea have found common ground and that Camara will be omitted from Monaco’s fixture with Marseille while he completes the final stages of the move. Earlier reporting had described negotiations as progressing quickly, with Chelsea hoping to wrap up the transfer over the weekend.
That is a meaningful escalation from simple interest. A medical appointment normally indicates clubs expect the principal terms to be resolved, though it is not confirmation of a completed transfer. Neither report establishes the fee, contract length, the structure of any payment, or whether all documents have been signed.
Those omissions matter, particularly late in a transfer window. A player being held out of a match can reflect an imminent sale, but it can also be a precaution while discussions continue. Chelsea and Monaco have not publicly clarified Camara’s status, so the expected timing should be treated as a target rather than a guarantee.
Fernandez remains the central uncertainty
The strongest common thread is Chelsea’s interest in Camara as they assess the future of Fernandez. Manchester City are reported to have discussed personal terms with the Argentina midfielder, but there is no consensus that the clubs are close to a transfer.

Replacement plan or wider midfield reshuffle?
Camara being targeted does not automatically make him a straight swap for Fernandez. The reports identify both players as midfielders, but they do not set out Xabi Alonso’s intended role for Camara, nor whether Chelsea view him as a starter, a squad option or part of a broader reconfiguration.

Camara’s potential signing may consequently serve more than one purpose: protecting against a high-profile departure, increasing depth, or giving Alonso a different profile in the middle of the pitch.
Liverpool have also been mentioned as a club alerted to Camara’s availability. Their reported interest provides a reason for Chelsea to advance talks promptly, although there is no indication that a competing bid has forced Monaco’s hand. The available reports do not explain whether Liverpool have made contact or whether Chelsea are simply furthest along in discussions.

Camara’s anticipated medical is the immediate test of the reports. Should he arrive in London and complete it, Chelsea would be close to adding a highly rated Senegal international from Monaco before the deadline. If the trip does not materialise, attention will return to whether the supposed agreement was conditional on unresolved matters.
Even a completed Camara transfer would not settle Fernandez’s future by itself. Manchester City must still decide whether to make an official bid, and Chelsea must determine whether the terms justify selling a player who remains central to the discussion around Alonso’s squad.
