Chelsea left Enzo Fernandez out of their Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town, intensifying scrutiny of Manchester City’s interest as the transfer window approaches its end.
The omission came despite Xabi Alonso having indicated before the match that the midfielder was fit and available. It immediately invited a reading that Fernandez’s future is moving closer to a resolution, particularly after reports that he is open to joining City. Yet Alonso’s explanation after the 2-0 win was more restrained: he described the selection as a football decision, made on the afternoon of the game, with other players requiring minutes.
A decision still rests with Chelsea
Multiple outlets agree that Chelsea would consider a sale at the right price and that their valuation is around £120m. They also agree that City’s interest has survived an earlier deadline associated with that price.
The significant uncertainty is how advanced the negotiations actually are. Reports attributed to Fabrizio Romano suggest City have maintained regular contact with Fernandez’s representatives and are preparing to speak directly with Chelsea to settle the matter. Other reporting, however, states that no formal club-to-club discussions have yet taken place.
That distinction matters. Player approval and agent contact can establish a possible route, but neither amounts to an agreement between the clubs. Chelsea’s position appears conditional rather than absolute: a departure would need to generate sufficient funds and leave time to improve Alonso’s squad. Selling a major midfielder late without a viable replacement would create a problem the fee alone cannot solve.
Chelsea have been linked with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as possible midfield additions, although both current clubs are said to regard those players as unavailable. That makes the practical side of a Fernandez exit harder to assess. The key question is not simply whether City can meet Chelsea’s valuation, but whether Chelsea can turn any proceeds into a replacement before the deadline.
The Luton omission is evidence, not confirmation
Fernandez being absent from the matchday squad is the clearest recent development, but it should not be treated as proof of an imminent transfer. Alonso explicitly rejected that interpretation, praising the Argentine’s conduct in training and leaving open the possibility that he could feature against Brighton.
There are reasonable sporting explanations for resting or excluding a player in a cup tie, especially when a manager wants to distribute minutes. Equally, clubs commonly reduce risk around players whose futures are unresolved. Alonso’s account does not eliminate the latter possibility; it simply means the available evidence remains inconclusive.
The episode nevertheless shows how awkward the situation has become. Fernandez has been linked with a move away throughout the summer, and reports say he was disciplined last season following remarks concerning a possible switch to Real Madrid. There was also a negative supporter reaction when he returned in pre-season. A player can remain available and professional amid such circumstances, but every team selection becomes a fresh signal for supporters and rival clubs to interpret.
Why City’s interest has logic
City’s need for central midfield depth gives the pursuit a clearer sporting context than a routine late-window opportunity. Rodri’s move to Barcelona, along with the departures of Nico Gonzalez, Tijjani Reijnders and Bernardo Silva, has altered the balance of the squad. City have already invested heavily in younger midfielders, including Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson, but Fernandez would bring a different profile: an experienced international capable of taking responsibility in possession and setting the tempo.
There is also a relationship element. Enzo Maresca, now City’s manager, previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea and entrusted him with leadership responsibilities when Reece James was unavailable. Maresca has publicly indicated that City could add further leaders to a young group before the window shuts. That does not identify Fernandez as the answer, but it helps explain why the move has persisted.
City are not operating with Fernandez as their only midfield consideration. Scott and Roma’s Manu Kone have also been mentioned in reporting, while the club have pursued options in other attacking areas. Their wider recruitment activity could affect the timing and urgency of any Chelsea approach.
What to watch before the deadline
The next meaningful indication will be whether City and Chelsea begin direct negotiations, rather than further contact through intermediaries. Chelsea’s own recruitment progress is equally important. Without a credible path to reinforce midfield, their incentive to resist a late sale increases sharply.
Fernandez’s availability for Chelsea’s next league match may attract attention, but it will still not settle the issue on its own. Alonso has made clear that selection will be judged game by game. For now, the transfer remains live but unresolved: City appear interested, the player is reported to be receptive, and Chelsea hold the final lever.
