Chelsea left Enzo Fernandez out of their Carabao Cup squad against Luton Town as Manchester City’s interest in the Argentina midfielder intensified.
The omission was particularly striking because Xabi Alonso had indicated only a day earlier that Fernandez was expected to feature. Before kick-off, however, the Chelsea head coach said the club had reviewed the circumstances and decided against selecting him. Alonso did not confirm that a transfer was imminent, but his subsequent comments made clear that the situation remained unresolved.
A significant signal, not confirmation
Multiple reports place City in discussions over a move that could be worth as much as £120m, which would take the deal beyond their previous spending benchmarks once potential extras are included. But there remains an important gap between interest, negotiation and a completed transfer.
One account suggests an agreement is close, while another says City’s mooted first proposal is £100m, below Chelsea’s £120m valuation. Those versions may not be irreconcilable: a lower guaranteed payment with substantial conditional payments could eventually reach Chelsea’s asking price. Yet neither report establishes the exact structure of any bid, whether Chelsea have accepted one, or whether Fernandez has agreed personal terms.
That distinction matters. Chelsea’s decision to exclude him plainly adds weight to the prospect of movement, especially after he made a substitute appearance in the league opener at Fulham. It does not, by itself, settle whether the player is being protected during talks, being managed after a disruptive few weeks, or has simply fallen outside Alonso’s plans for this cup tie.
Chelsea’s stance has changed quickly
The timing is awkward for Alonso. He had publicly praised Fernandez’s application in training and initially anticipated using him against Luton. The reversal placed the coach in a familiar transfer-window position: asked to prepare a competitive side while being unable to offer certainty over a prominent player’s future.
Fernandez remains a player with a long Chelsea contract, with reports putting six years still to run. That gives the club leverage and helps explain why a sale would require an exceptional fee. Chelsea are not under obvious contractual pressure to accept an offer below their valuation, even if the midfielder’s absence suggests they are willing to entertain City’s approach.
There is also a possible chain reaction at Stamford Bridge. Reports indicate Chelsea could renew their pursuit of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott if Fernandez leaves, although Bournemouth have so far resisted interest. The reported £80m to £90m range being discussed for Scott illustrates the problem Chelsea would face: selling a high-level midfielder late in the window creates an expensive replacement search, rather than simply releasing funds for other areas.
Why City have returned for Fernandez
City’s pursuit is rooted in a major reconstruction of their midfield after Rodri and Bernardo Silva departed, with Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders also reported to have moved on. Elliot Anderson and teenage prospect Ayyoub Bouaddi have arrived, but Fernandez would represent a different kind of purchase: an established international expected to carry responsibility immediately.
The potential reunion with Enzo Maresca is central to the logic. Maresca knows Fernandez from their time at Chelsea and would not be signing him solely on reputation. If City are prepared to approach Chelsea’s valuation, they will be doing so with a defined role in mind, rather than merely adding another talented name to an already crowded rebuild.
Fernandez could offer control in possession, progression from deeper areas and the ability to connect City’s new midfield components. But the scale of the proposed outlay would also raise questions. City have already invested heavily in replacing departing players, and a package around £120m would make Fernandez the headline addition to that overhaul. The expectation would be far greater than for a developmental signing such as Bouaddi.
What remains unclear before the window closes
Neither report explains why City missed Chelsea’s reported informal deadline earlier this month, or whether that deadline still carries any relevance. The more pertinent issue is whether the clubs can bridge the difference between a reported £100m opening position and Chelsea’s public valuation.
Fernandez’s exclusion may accelerate those conversations, but it could also be designed to avoid a distracting matchday narrative while Chelsea determine their own next move. Alonso’s selection against Luton, featuring Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in a strong side, showed that he was not treating the fixture casually. Leaving Fernandez out was therefore a conspicuous choice.
For City, completing the deal would turn a broad midfield reset into a clear statement about who will lead its next phase. For Chelsea, it would mean losing a long-contracted, high-value player and immediately confronting the challenge of reinvesting. Until the fee, payment terms and replacement plan are clearer, the squad omission is the strongest indication yet of a live transfer story — but not its conclusion.
