Joao Pedro has been omitted from Chelsea’s squad against Tottenham after suffering a fitness problem during Friday’s training session, leaving Xabi Alonso to reshape his attack for the London derby. Chelsea are carrying out medical checks, with neither the severity of the injury nor a recovery timetable established.
Geovany Quenda takes the vacant starting place alongside Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, while Danny Welbeck remains among the substitutes. The selection points towards a different attacking approach rather than a straightforward replacement for the absent Brazilian.
What is known about Pedro’s injury
According to multiple outlets, Pedro’s absence followed a problem sustained in training rather than an issue disclosed after the previous match. Alonso explained before kick-off that fluid was present and further examinations were needed to determine the extent of the injury.
That leaves an important distinction between the confirmed absence and the possible consequences. Pedro cannot face Tottenham, but there is not yet enough information to establish whether Chelsea are dealing with a short interruption or a longer spell without him.
He previously missed the Brentford match before the September international break because of a knee injury and subsequently withdrew from Brazil duty. However, the reports do not establish that this latest problem involves the same injury. Treating it as a recurrence would go beyond the information available.
His recent workload also offers no definitive explanation. Pedro returned to score twice against Bournemouth and completed the match against Everton last weekend. Those appearances demonstrate that he had resumed a substantial playing role; they do not, by themselves, show why this setback occurred.
Reports also noted that he appeared in training photographs on Friday. That is compatible with Alonso’s account of an issue arising during the session, rather than evidence that the omission had another cause.
Quenda selection changes the attacking question
Pedro’s production makes his absence significant: he has contributed five goals and three assists across six Premier League appearances this season. Chelsea therefore lose both a scorer and a player who has helped create goals for others.
The more revealing selection decision is Alonso’s response. Welbeck is available on the bench, yet Quenda has been chosen for his first Premier League start. Rather than beginning with the experienced central striker, Chelsea have selected an attacking trio whose precise responsibilities remain uncertain.
One report identifies Palmer or Rogers as the likely central option, but neither account confirms the arrangement. It would therefore be premature to describe a fixed formation or assign either player a definitive role before the game unfolds.
The potential trade-off is nevertheless clear. Movement between the three attackers could make Chelsea less dependent on a single central reference point, while also placing greater demands on their coordination. Someone must still occupy Tottenham’s centre-backs and provide a target when possession reaches advanced areas.
Welbeck’s presence gives Alonso a way to change that balance during the match. His omission from the starting XI does not establish a permanent change in the striking hierarchy; it shows which response the coach has chosen for this particular opponent.
Two absences, two different uncertainties
Chelsea are also changing goalkeeper, with Mike Penders replacing Emiliano Martinez. Martinez underwent surgery after fracturing his jaw in a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite during the Everton match and is expected to miss several weeks.
The distinction matters. There is an identified injury and a broad recovery expectation for Martinez, whereas Pedro’s situation remains at the assessment stage. Combining both absences into a single injury outlook would obscure how much less is currently known about the forward.
Together, however, they mean Chelsea enter the derby with changes at opposite ends of the team. Alonso must accommodate a different goalkeeper while finding an attacking structure without his most productive available starting striker.
Liverpool outlook depends on the tests
The next immediate question is whether Pedro can return for the midweek Carabao Cup fourth-round visit to Liverpool. Reports frame his availability as uncertain, but there is no confirmed return date against which to measure his chances.
For now, the Tottenham selection provides firmer evidence than any projected recovery schedule. Alonso has favoured Quenda’s inclusion over a direct switch to Welbeck, preserving an experienced striking alternative on the bench. Whether that solution is needed beyond the derby will depend on medical findings Chelsea have yet to disclose.
