Liverpool have agreed a deal that could reach £123m to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola, with the France international expected on Merseyside for a medical before committing to a five-year contract.
Multiple outlets agree on the central figures: Liverpool would pay £106m up front, with a further £17m dependent on add-ons. The move is not yet formally complete, and the medical and final paperwork remain decisive steps, but the reporting points to negotiations having moved beyond the speculative stage.
A social-media post from Barcola’s Paris barber was presented by one report as a sign that the player was preparing to leave France. It adds colour to the story rather than confirmation in itself. The more consequential development is the broad agreement among reports that PSG and Liverpool have settled on a price after a lengthy stand-off.
Liverpool have brought PSG’s valuation down
The eventual package matters because it shows the compromise both clubs have reached. PSG were said to have begun from a £145m valuation, while Liverpool have apparently secured a lower guaranteed payment and shifted part of the risk into bonuses.
That is a familiar structure for a deal of this scale, but it also answers one major question around Liverpool’s pursuit. They were prepared to make Barcola a record-level investment without simply matching PSG’s first demand. The £17m in variables enables PSG to retain the prospect of a larger return if Barcola succeeds, while Liverpool limit the immediate cost.
There is less clarity over exactly what prompted PSG to soften. Some reporting says Barcola had made clear he wanted the transfer and was not looking to extend his existing contract, which runs until 2028. That would strengthen Liverpool’s negotiating position, though it has not been independently detailed in every account. What is clear is that PSG were not selling a peripheral player: Barcola has been a major contributor during three successful seasons in Paris.
He arrived from Lyon in 2023 for a reported £38.5m and leaves, if the add-ons are met, for more than three times that sum. His PSG record of 39 goals in 152 appearances illustrates both his production and the price premium attached to an established, 23-year-old international attacker.
A replacement, but not a like-for-like one
Reports consistently link Liverpool’s interest to the need to reshape an attack following Mohamed Salah’s departure, with one account also placing Luis Diaz among the recent exits. Barcola should not be viewed as a straight swap for either player.
Barcola is right-footed but is most naturally used from the left, where he can carry the ball inside and attack the penalty area. He can operate on the right or centrally, according to BBC Sport, yet his best-known role overlaps most directly with Cody Gakpo’s preferred starting area rather than the right-sided position Salah made his own.
That makes this a squad-construction decision as much as a replacement signing. Liverpool are reportedly still seeking a specialist right winger, having examined moves for Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr. Those pursuits suggest Barcola is being recruited principally for his overall quality and flexibility, not as the sole answer to the vacancy on the right.
There is also a central dimension. With Hugo Ekitike reportedly recovering from a serious Achilles problem, Barcola’s ability to play through the middle could give new head coach Andoni Iraola another short-term option around Alexander Isak. It would be a different profile from a conventional centre-forward, but useful versatility can be especially valuable while an attacking unit is being rebuilt.
Gakpo’s future becomes the next issue
The clearest immediate consequence of Barcola’s arrival may concern Gakpo. BBC Sport reports interest in the Netherlands forward from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, while other reports go further in discussing a possible Tottenham move. Those are not the same thing: interest from rival clubs is not evidence that Liverpool are ready to sell.
Iraola has publicly said he wants Gakpo to remain, while acknowledging he cannot offer guarantees in the closing stages of a transfer window. That is a measured response, and it reflects the uncertainty created by adding another high-profile player whose strongest position is on the left.
Liverpool could retain both and create genuine competition, particularly if Barcola is used across the front line. Selling Gakpo, however, would turn the Frenchman from an addition into part of a wider reallocation of minutes and resources. The club’s reported continued search for more attacking reinforcements means neither scenario can yet be treated as settled.
Medical still separates agreement from completion
The reports vary only slightly on timing, describing a medical within 24 hours or over the weekend. They agree that Barcola has not yet signed. Until that happens, the transfer remains an agreed deal rather than a completed one.
Nevertheless, Liverpool appear to have secured one of the window’s defining attacking transfers. The real test will be whether a player who thrived in PSG’s elite, trophy-winning environment can become the focal point of a new-looking Liverpool forward line — and whether his arrival is followed by further change around him.
