Liverpool are preparing for Bradley Barcola to undergo a medical after reaching an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for a deal that could be worth £123m. Reports indicate that the France international’s move is now close to completion, subject to the standard final checks and paperwork.
The proposed structure is an initial £106m, with a further £17m dependent on performance-related conditions. Multiple outlets agree on those broad terms and on the expectation that Barcola will take his medical over the weekend. One report also states that he is expected to commit to a five-year contract.
A breakthrough after a long negotiation
The deal appears to have moved quickly once Liverpool and PSG settled on a valuation. Talks had been running for some time, with Barcola identified as a principal target in Andoni Iraola’s first transfer window as Liverpool head coach.
PSG had reportedly initially sought £145m, a figure Liverpool were unwilling to meet. The eventual agreement therefore matters as much for its construction as its headline value: Liverpool have accepted an enormous guaranteed payment, while retaining £17m of the total for future triggers. What those clauses require has not been made public. They could be linked to appearances, trophies, European qualification or individual output, but neither report specifies the details.
That ambiguity will remain relevant when the transfer is assessed. A £106m signing and a £123m signing carry different immediate financial implications, even if both represent a major commitment. The maximum figure will dominate the conversation, but the guaranteed sum is already sufficient to make this one of the defining purchases of Liverpool’s summer.
Liverpool’s new winger priority
The pursuit also gives a clearer indication of Iraola’s early priorities. Liverpool have already brought in Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna, while their recruitment staff reportedly explored several other wide options. A bid for Yan Diomande did not lead to a deal before he joined Real Madrid, and approaches for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh were also unsuccessful. Ismaila Sarr was another player considered.
Barcola is plainly not simply a contingency signing after those moves failed. The accounts of negotiations describe him as Liverpool’s leading objective, and the length of the discussions with PSG supports that assessment. The club have chosen to make a substantial investment in a 23-year-old who has already operated at the highest level with the French champions, rather than spreading the budget across several lower-cost alternatives.
There is, however, an important question that remains unanswered: how Iraola intends to arrange a crowded attacking unit. Liverpool’s interest in more than one winger suggests the new coach wants greater depth and tactical variety in those areas. Yet adding Barcola after Muñoz would increase competition for minutes rather than resolve a publicly defined vacancy.
Reports have suggested that a further wide signing before the deadline could affect Cody Gakpo’s future. That remains speculation rather than an established consequence of the Barcola agreement, but it illustrates the wider squad-management issue. Liverpool’s business may not end when Barcola signs; a major arrival can alter the logic of departures as well as further recruitment.
A place among Liverpool’s biggest deals
If every add-on is met, Barcola would become Liverpool’s second-costliest signing, behind Alexander Isak’s £125m arrival last summer. He would also move ahead of Florian Wirtz, whose own deal was reported as £100m guaranteed and potentially £116m in total.
That context shows the scale of Liverpool’s recent transfer strategy. Barcola would not be an isolated statement purchase but another in a sequence of high-value investments designed to refresh the side quickly. Ronald Araújo has also arrived on loan from Barcelona, while defender Jérémy Jacquet’s £55m move from Rennes had been arranged in January.
The immediate focus, though, is Barcola’s medical. Personal terms were reportedly given approval by the player’s representatives last month, and club-to-club agreement now appears to be in place. Unless an issue emerges during the final process, Liverpool are set to add a winger whose fee will bring both heightened expectations and a significant tactical decision for their new head coach.
