Tijjani Reijnders has completed a permanent move from Manchester City to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah, ending his stay in England after one season.
The reported value differs slightly between outlets: one puts the deal at £52m, while another describes City accepting an offer of around £51m. Both reports agree that the Netherlands midfielder has joined Brendan Rodgers' Al-Qadsiah and that City have sanctioned a swift departure for a player they signed from AC Milan last summer.
A short City spell comes to an end
Reijnders arrived at City for £46.5m and made 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven times. He also featured in the side that won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during Pep Guardiola's final campaign in charge.
Yet his role appeared to be increasingly uncertain. New manager Enzo Maresca omitted him from the squad for the 3-0 Community Shield loss to Arsenal, a decision that preceded confirmation of the transfer. Reijnders had started each of the Netherlands' three World Cup group matches, although he did not play in their last-32 defeat to Morocco.
In a farewell message released through City, Reijnders thanked the club's players, staff and supporters, reflecting positively on his time at the Etihad despite its brevity. A reported five-year contract at Al-Qadsiah would give the 28-year-old a longer-term setting after a season in which he was involved regularly but did not establish himself as an untouchable part of City's midfield.
City midfield reset continues
The transfer adds to a significant period of change in the City squad. Reports say Rodri has moved to Barcelona, while Bernardo Silva has departed after his contract expired. One outlet also includes John Stones and Nathan Ake among the senior exits, while Nico Gonzalez has been linked with Newcastle.
Those departures make Reijnders' sale more than an isolated transaction. City are reshaping an area that has been central to their success over recent years, and the reports connect their recruitment work with Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez. Another report says Elliot Anderson has already arrived from Nottingham Forest.
The financial detail matters in that context. Even taking the lower reported figure of around £51m, City appear to have recovered more than the £46.5m paid to AC Milan. That does not settle whether the signing worked on the pitch, but it limits the financial downside of moving on quickly and creates room for Maresca to build a midfield suited to his own approach.
What the move means for Al-Qadsiah
For Al-Qadsiah, Reijnders brings a player with recent experience in a trophy-winning English side and international exposure with the Netherlands. His arrival also pairs him with Rodgers, whose appointment offers a recognisable managerial structure for a club adding a high-profile central midfielder.
The more meaningful early question will be how Rodgers uses Reijnders: as a progressive midfielder carrying possession forward, as a creator closer to the attacking line, or as one component of a broader rebuild.
