Sunderland appear to have moved back into pole position for Lyon winger Malick Fofana after Crystal Palace made a late attempt to take over the deal.
The Black Cats were initially understood to have reached an agreement with Lyon on deadline day, only for Palace to establish their own arrangement with the French club and speak directly to the player. Later reporting indicated Sunderland had revived their push and that Fofana was preparing to head north rather than to London.
That does not yet amount to a completed transfer. The most consistent element across the reports is that both Premier League clubs have agreements in place with Lyon, leaving the final choice with the Belgium international and the remaining medical and contractual steps.
Two club agreements, one unresolved decision
The fee discussed by the principal broadcasters is just below £30m, made up of roughly £25.6m to £25.7m guaranteed and about £4.3m in potential add-ons. Sunderland had reportedly obtained permission for Fofana to travel and had a five-year contract prepared after getting their deal in place.
Palace then entered the picture before those formalities were completed. Reports said the player had not undergone a Sunderland medical, an important detail because it meant there was still time for Palace to put their own proposal to him rather than needing Lyon to reopen an already-finalised sale.
One account described Fofana at Lyon airport with private flights available for London and Sunderland. While that made for an unusually visible illustration of the deadline-day uncertainty, other coverage was more restrained: Palace were said to be handling the paperwork, while Sunderland were considering a medical in France as they tried to prevent the switch.
The reports are not entirely aligned on the player’s immediate travel plans. One suggested he had already departed for Sunderland; another said arrangements remained contingent on his decision. Until either club confirms a medical and signature, the latter is the safer reading of an unusually fluid situation.
Why Sunderland’s late move may matter
The suggestion that Sunderland improved the commission package for Fofana’s representatives adds a significant layer to the story. That detail has not been independently set out across all of the reporting, so it should not be treated as settled fact. But if accurate, it explains how Sunderland could regain momentum despite Palace obtaining the same basic prerequisite: an accepted offer from Lyon.
It also underlines that this is no longer principally a negotiation over the transfer fee. Lyon appear willing to sell at terms acceptable to both sides. The contest instead concerns the player’s preferred destination, the contract around the deal and the ability of each club to finish the process before the window closes.
Sunderland’s position carries a clear footballing appeal. They have qualified for the Europa League ahead of their first European campaign for more than five decades, and reports say Fofana is attracted by that prospect. A five-year agreement would also point to a long-term role rather than a short-term deadline-day solution.
Palace, however, have shown they believe Fofana is worth an assertive late intervention. Their direct contact with the winger changed a deal that had looked close to routine into a player-led choice. For Palace, securing a club agreement so quickly ensured they could present themselves as a fully viable destination rather than merely registering interest.
Arsenal interest set the background
Arsenal had been linked with Fofana before Sunderland and Palace accelerated their moves, but the reports agree that the champions did not reach an agreement with Lyon. The precise reason is framed differently: one account suggested Arsenal would not meet Lyon’s valuation, while others simply state that the clubs failed to settle a fee.
Either way, Arsenal’s withdrawal created space for two rivals prepared to move decisively. Sunderland’s pursuit had itself evolved after other attacking targets proved difficult to secure, with Marseille rejecting an approach for Igor Paixao and Jack Grealish appearing likely to remain in the north west.
That context matters because Fofana was not Sunderland’s first explored option, but he has become their priority. They are reportedly also talking to Benfica about Dodi Lukebakio as a contingency, a sensible safeguard given how close Palace came to turning the situation around.
What still needs to happen
The key outstanding question is not whether Lyon will sanction a sale; both clubs have apparently cleared that hurdle. It is where Fofana will complete his medical, agree personal terms and sign.
There is also a small discrepancy in descriptions of the player’s age, with some coverage calling him 20 and another 21. That does not alter the transfer mechanics, but it reflects the speed with which the story has developed and the need for caution around claims of a definitive outcome.
For now, Sunderland seem to have regained the initiative after Palace’s attempted hijack. Yet the race remains open until Fofana’s destination is confirmed, and a deal that has already swung more than once could still produce another late turn.
