Vinícius Júnior has reported back to Real Madrid pre-season and spoken positively about working with José Mourinho, while uncertainty over his contract continues to fuel links with Arsenal.
The Brazil forward, 26, told Real Madrid’s media channels that his early sessions under the new head coach had gone well. His description of Mourinho’s message was straightforward: the manager wants him to retain the positive, expressive approach that has defined his game.
That public show of alignment does not settle the wider question over Vinícius’s future. He is entering the last year of his existing Madrid deal, according to multiple outlets, and Arsenal have been repeatedly linked with a possible move.
A positive start, but no transfer resolution
Vinícius’s comments were centred on preparation rather than the speculation around him. He discussed the physical demands of pre-season, including gym work and training designed to build fitness after a busy summer with Brazil.
Reports also noted that he scored four times and made one goal at the World Cup, although Brazil exited in the round of 16 against Norway. His late return to club work therefore comes after a limited break and a substantial international workload.
Mourinho’s apparent willingness to give Vinícius freedom is relevant in the context of the transfer discussion. There had been questions over how the winger might fit into a new regime, particularly with Kylian Mbappé also central to Madrid’s attacking plans. The player’s initial public assessment suggests there has been no immediate indication that he will be marginalised.
That is not the same as a commitment to remain. A player can be fully engaged in pre-season while contractual negotiations continue, and Madrid have strong reason to seek clarity before the risk of a free transfer next summer becomes more immediate.
Contract impasse remains the key issue
The central factor is not Vinícius’s attitude in training but the gap, if one remains, between his expectations and Madrid’s proposed terms. The reports agree that negotiations are unresolved, though they offer differing levels of detail on what may happen next.

Soccernews reported that Arsenal’s interest could involve a fee around €150m, while the Guardian focused more broadly on the prospect of Madrid losing a major asset without compensation in 2027. Neither account established that a bid had been made or that negotiations between Arsenal and Madrid were under way.
The distinction matters. Interest from Arsenal and a difficult renewal process at Madrid create a plausible market narrative, but there remains no confirmed decision from Vinícius or either club. His public comments offered no direct indication that he wants a transfer.
Madrid’s sporting case for keeping him
Whatever the contract position, Madrid’s case for retaining Vinícius is clear from his output and his record at the club. The Guardian credited him with 128 goals and 100 assists for Madrid, underlining the scale of his contribution across eight seasons.
Last term, he produced 22 goals and 10 assists in all competitions excluding the Club World Cup, according to Soccernews. That total of 32 goal contributions was described as his lowest single-season return for Madrid since 2020-21, but it still represented a significant attacking contribution.
A relative dip in output is therefore different from a decline in importance. Vinícius remains a proven high-level forward, and Mourinho’s early message appears designed to preserve the qualities that make him difficult to defend against rather than reshape him into a more conservative player.
Madrid must balance that sporting value against their wage structure, the demands of a player approaching the end of his contract, and the wider construction of an attack containing Mbappé. Arsenal, meanwhile, would be monitoring whether those issues become serious enough to turn reported interest into an attainable deal.
Arsenal await clearer signals
